Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel

Are you deliberating between a King mattress or Queen mattress? The decision to purchase a larger bed requires careful consideration of room size, future needs and cost. We discuss when it might be ideal for you to buy a King bed, including King size bed dimensions and bed base options.

A popular choice for Australians

We collect a wide array of responses from our online Mattress Selector tool every year. Designed to help you find your perfect Sealy mattress, the form asks about your ideal comfort level and preferred size.

In 2020, over 46% of respondents said they were looking for a King size bed, while 40% selected Queen. These were by far the most popular choices, so how do you decide between the two?

Lifestyle and future needs

Due to its width and additional space, a King size bed is typically large enough to accommodate a couple with plenty of room to stretch out and sleep soundly. They are also popular amongst those with growing families, as a King size offers more space for young ones to join you.

Minimised partner disturbance promotes deeper, more refreshing sleep. Shift workers and restless sleepers often prefer a King mattress for this reason.

King size bed dimensions

The dimensions of a King size bed are 1835 mm wide and 2030 mm long. This is the same length as a Queen mattress, but offers an additional 310 mm in width. A Super King is wider again, over 500 mm wider than a Queen. This is one of the larger mattress sizes available, offering a premium Sealy Posturepedic sleeping experience.

Comparing King size bed dimensions to other popular choices

fitting a king size bed into your room

The size you choose is largely dependent on the space available in your bedroom. Aside from fitting the mattress itself, you will need to ensure you can walk around the sides of your bed frame, leaving enough room to regularly rotate your mattress without hitting any walls.

We generally recommend a minimum clearance of 75–90 cm on all sides, allowing room to open any nearby doors or drawers. Please add this on to the King size bed dimensions when calculating whether this size is right for your space.

Match it with a King bed base

A King size mattress sits on two separate bases, otherwise known as a Split King.  This makes the bed easier to move, and also minimises disturbance caused by movement across the bed.
