There's a lot to think about when choosing your next mattress, but size is one of the easier things to decide. The details like firm vs. soft and foam vs. innerspring can come later. Before you decide on what mattress size you want, you should consider how much space you have, who's sleeping in the bed, and what comfort means to you. Let's look at each in more detail.
Room to move
This is the most important factor, as the size of your bedroom will dictate how big your mattress can be. Some people want to fill up a lot of their bedroom with their mattress, while others prefer to have more space for things like bedside tables, wardrobes and bookshelves. It's ultimately a personal choice, so we recommend you use a measuring tape, map out your room on a piece of paper, and decide exactly how much space you want for your bed. You don't want to bring home a mattress and have it be anything other than perfect.
Who's in the bed?
Children grow up incredibly fast, especially during adolescence. If you have children, it's likely they'll only have one or two mattresses before they eventually leave home. Purchasing a King Single for your four-year-old son might seem a little excessive, however, not when you consider that he could triple in size within a decade. If you’re buying a bed as a couple, you need to think about how much space you both want or are used to when sleeping.
Sprawling or curled up, tossing and turning, or like a rock … how do you sleep? Or perhaps more importantly, how does your partner sleep? If your partner moonlights as a starfish, you might want the King size mattress to get a little breathing space. Big beds, however aren't just for couples – many single sleepers opt for the Queen size mattress because they like to have space around them while sleeping. If you're very tall, you should be looking at the King Single or the Queen for the extra length.
Everyone has different preferences when it comes to mattress sizes. Take a look at your lifestyle, how much room you have, how much bed space you want … and go with what feels right for you.
